Evidence passed to FSA investigators by Financial Mail proved that the firm lied to its clients and gave them misleading information about high-risk shares.

Many of the shares were in small, high-risk American companies whose shares cannot be sold to the US public, but can be marketed overseas. Out of more than 40 shares known to have been marketed by Pacific Continental, all but one became worthless or nearworthless.

Many clients saw their entire investment wiped out. However, the brokers profited because they were paid by US backers to recommend the shares. One of Griggs' hottest tips was for Atlantic Wine Agencies. Based in Knightsbridge, central London, the company turned out to be linked to conman Benjamin Mauerberger, who was already wanted in New Zealand in connection with a scam. The shares collapsed.

Mr Revell-Reade's companies SMA Consultants and Endeavour Securities have been granted financial services licences by ASIC.

Mr Sutherland controls two foreign exchange trading companies, Go Markets, owned through a company in Singapore, and a second company established in December, Vantage FX, owned through a company in Hong Kong. Both use a financial services licence granted to Go Markets.

Mr Hill, the managing director of Go Markets, said he was unaware of the ownership structure of the Go Markets group, which was initially established in Australia as an offshoot of Pacific Continental Securities in Britain.
